Street Scene Director Craig Johnson wins Ivey Award!

On Monday evening, September 19, 2011 Director Craig Johnson was honored with an Ivey Award for this outstanding direction of Girl Friday Productions’ Street Scene! Here is how the award was announced by presenters at the sold-out house of 2,000 at the State Theater in Minneapolis:

Every great production needs a great director, and our next honoree is most certainly that. Ivey called his vision “spot-on,” and said he “put together a killer ensemble that wowed us—there was delicate attention to detail within each character and moment.”

“The piece had a life of its own—the whole was more than the sum of its parts—the mark of a truly talented director.” And he did it all while breaking the cardinal rule—don’t work with kids or animals.

For his spot-on, luminous direction of Street Scene for Girl Friday Productions, Ivey Award recognition goes to Craig Johnson.

Additionally, Girl Friday’s leading lady in Street Scene, Anna Sundberg, received the Ivey Emerging Artist Award! Congratulations to Craig and Anna, and thank you to our outstanding ensemble, production team, and Twin Cities’ audiences!

About Street Scene

Street Scene ran July 7-30, 2011, at the Minneapolis Theater Garage for 15 performances.

Elmer Rice's 1929 Pulitzer Prize-winning Street Scene is a rich collage of the universal dramas and dreams of New York City tenement dwellers. Surprisingly relevant for today, this rarely produced masterpiece explores the comedy and tragedy of daily life through the experiences of several working class families, many of them new immigrants. Twenty-six actors and one dog tackled nearly 60 roles in this detailed slice of life. Teeming with humanity, Street Scene offered a bold ensemble exploration of American society.
